PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality slider — the output always preserves complete pixel data. That makes results predictable: the same input always produces the same quality output.

A note on size: lossless file size depends on image complexity. Screenshots and graphics with flat colors compress extremely well; photographic content will come out noticeably larger than lossy formats like JPG or WebP — the fair price of zero loss.

There are three honest reasons to convert JPG to PNG, and they have nothing to do with making a photo look better. First, editing: PNG is lossless, so once you convert JPG to PNG, every later save keeps the exact same pixels — no more quality bleeding away each time you re-save, the way it does with JPG. Second, compatibility in the other direction: plenty of upload forms, design tools, game engines, and asset pipelines accept PNG only and reject JPG. Third, content type: screenshots, logos, icons, and any graphic with text or sharp edges look cleaner stored as PNG, because JPG smears those crisp boundaries with compression artifacts.

This is the key difference from converting WebP to PNG, which is about software that cannot open WebP at all. Converting JPG to PNG is almost always about a workflow choice — moving a lossy file into a lossless container so the next step in your pipeline behaves. Knowing which problem you actually have saves you from a conversion that will not do what you hoped, which is exactly what the next two sections cover.

This is the single most common reason people convert JPG to PNG — and the single biggest misunderstanding. PNG can store transparency, so it is easy to assume that converting JPG to PNG produces a transparent background. It does not. A JPG has no alpha channel and a solid background; converting it to PNG copies those exact solid pixels into a PNG. If what you actually want is a see-through background — to drop a logo onto a colored banner, or isolate a product from its backdrop — that is a different operation called background removal. It identifies the subject and erases the rest into real transparency, and only then does saving as PNG keep that transparency. Format conversion alone can never do it, no matter which converter you use. Convert JPG to PNG when you need a lossless file; reach for a background remover when you need the background gone.

No — and it is worth being precise about why. JPG is a lossy format: when the photo was first saved as JPG, fine detail was permanently discarded to shrink the file. Converting JPG to PNG cannot bring that detail back. PNG is lossless, so it faithfully preserves whatever the JPG currently contains — including any compression artifacts already baked in. You get a perfect, lossless copy of an imperfect source. The image will not look sharper, cleaner, or higher resolution after the conversion.

What the conversion does give you is a clean stopping point. Once your image is PNG, editing and re-saving it no longer loses anything, because PNG never re-compresses. So if you are about to retouch a JPG in several passes, converting JPG to PNG first is genuinely useful — it stops the slow quality decay that comes from repeatedly saving a JPG. That is a real, honest benefit. Expecting the picture itself to improve is not.

Because PNG stores every pixel losslessly while JPG throws data away to stay small, the same image is almost always larger as a PNG. For photographs the jump is dramatic — often five to ten times the JPG size — since photos are exactly the kind of content JPG compresses best and PNG compresses worst.
