What's the difference between GIF and JPG?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) and JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group image) solve different problems: GIF is a lossless compression format built for short looping animations, memes, reactions, while JPG is a lossy compression format whose strength is photos, web images, email attachments. In practice you will meet GIF when dealing with short looping animations, memes, reactions, and reach for JPG when you need photos, web images, email attachments — the table below compares them point by point.

Why convert GIF to JPG?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap format created by CompuServe in 1987. Limited to 256 colors per frame, it survives because of one feature: simple, universally supported animation. Every chat app, browser, and social platform plays GIFs without a video player. Here is when JPG is the better choice:

  • JPG opens everywhere — every browser, OS, photo app, and office tool supports it without plugins.
  • Files are small: a JPG photo is typically 5–10× smaller than the same image as PNG.
  • It runs in the cloud — 10 free conversions a day with files up to 200 MB (20/day and 500 MB with a free account) — so even a phone or an old laptop converts at full speed.

Before you convert: three quick tips

  • If your image has a transparent background, pick a target that supports it (PNG, WebP, AVIF); converting to JPG fills transparency with white.
  • For web use, the modern formats (WebP, AVIF) save the most bandwidth; for maximum compatibility, JPG and PNG remain the safe choices.
  • Keep your original GIF — conversion never modifies it, and if you later need a different target format, starting from the original always gives the best quality.

JPG conversion settings explained

The quality setting (1–100) controls how aggressively JPG compresses. Filevo defaults to 85 — the golden value for web and everyday sharing: compression artifacts are essentially invisible while files stay around half the size of quality 100.

How to choose: 75–80 for web images where every kilobyte counts; 85 (default) for almost everything; 95+ for print or images you plan to edit further. Note that quality 100 is still not lossless — choose PNG or TIFF as the target if you need true lossless output.

How the conversion works

Filevo converts GIF to JPG with libvips, the high-performance open-source image engine that powers the Sharp library used across the industry. libvips processes images as a stream with a tiny memory footprint, so a typical photo converts in under a second. The work happens on our servers, not your device — a phone or an aging laptop converts just as fast as a workstation.

Why convert GIF to JPG?

GIF is an old format with two hard limits: it can only show 256 colors, and it’s often bulky for what it contains. JPG has none of those constraints — it stores full-color images efficiently and is accepted literally everywhere photos are. You convert GIF to JPG when you want a normal still photo out of a GIF: to shrink the file, to drop it somewhere that only takes JPG (older systems, some upload forms, print workflows), or simply to get a clean, full-color image instead of a 256-color one.

Animated GIF? You’ll get the first frame

JPG can’t hold animation — an animated GIF converts to a single still: its first frame

This is the one thing to know before converting: JPG is a still-image format, so it cannot store animation. When you convert an animated GIF to JPG, Filevo takes the first frame and saves that as the photo — the motion is not preserved. That’s exactly right when you want a single still out of a GIF (a thumbnail, a poster image, one clean frame). But if you need to keep the animation, JPG is the wrong target — keep it as a GIF or convert to a video format instead.

GIF transparency becomes white

JPG has no transparency — any transparent areas in the GIF are filled with whiteWebP · transparentcheckerboard = transparentconvertJPG · white filldefault: whitefilled solid white

Many GIFs have transparent areas, but JPG can’t store transparency at all. So when converting to JPG, Filevo fills any transparent pixels with a solid white background — the standard, predictable result. If preserving the see-through areas matters, convert to PNG instead, which keeps an alpha channel. For ordinary photos and most GIFs, white-fill is exactly what you want.

Convert GIF to JPG on any device

On iPhone or Android: open this page in your browser, tap Browse Files, and pick the GIF — no app required. On Windows or Mac: drag the GIF straight from Explorer or Finder into the converter above. The conversion runs in the cloud, so the same converter behaves identically everywhere.

What is JPG?

JPG (or JPEG) is a lossy raster image format released in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. It compresses photographs into small files by discarding visual detail the eye rarely notices, and is the most widely supported image format on the web, in cameras, and across operating systems.

GIF to JPG converter FAQ

How do I convert GIF to JPG for free?

Drop your GIF file into the converter at the top of this page, confirm JPG as the target, click Convert, and download the result. It is genuinely free: 10 free conversions a day with files up to 200 MB (20/day and 500 MB with a free account), no watermarks, no software to install, no account required.

Is it safe to convert GIF files online?

Yes. Transfers are TLS-encrypted end to end, and conversion is fully automated — no human ever sees your files. Your uploaded GIF is deleted the moment conversion finishes, and the converted JPG auto-deletes after 24 hours (you can delete it sooner). We never use your files for AI training or share them with anyone.

Will I lose quality converting GIF to JPG?

Your GIF source is lossless, so the output quality depends entirely on the quality setting you pick. The defaults produce results visually or audibly indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.

How long does GIF to JPG conversion take?

Usually seconds. The conversion itself takes from under a second to a few seconds for images and audio — most of the wait is the upload, which depends on your connection speed. Since processing happens in the cloud, your device stays fast, and you can run several conversions in parallel.

Can I convert GIF to JPG on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Filevo runs entirely in the browser, so it works the same on iPhone, Android, tablets, and computers — no app to install. On mobile, tap Browse Files to pick from your photos or files.

What's the maximum file size?

Anonymous conversions accept files up to 200 MB; a free account raises that to 500 MB. Paid plans go from 1 GB up to 10 GB per file, with higher daily limits and priority queues.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes. Drop up to 50 files at once — they roll through the queue automatically. Pick a target format per file or set one per category, then download results individually or grab everything as a single ZIP.

Does converting change my image dimensions or resolution?

No. Converting GIF to JPG keeps the original pixel dimensions — a 4000×3000 image stays 4000×3000. Only the encoding and the file size change.

Does JPG support transparency?

No. JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas are filled with a solid background (Filevo uses white) during conversion. If you need transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

What happens to an animated GIF when I convert it to JPG?

You get a single still image — the first frame of the animation — because JPG can’t store motion. That’s ideal for grabbing a thumbnail or poster frame. To keep the animation, don’t convert to JPG; keep the GIF or use a video format.

Will the JPG be smaller than the GIF?

Usually, especially for photo-like GIFs — JPG’s full-color compression is more efficient than GIF for those. Very simple graphics with few colors can come out similar in size. Either way you gain universal compatibility and full color.

Does the GIF’s 256-color limit affect the JPG?

The JPG itself is full-color, but it can only show the colors the GIF already had. Converting can’t add back detail the 256-color GIF discarded — it faithfully renders the source in a full-color container, ready for normal photo use.

Whether you need photos, web images, email attachments or simply a file that works where GIF will not open, the converter above turns GIF into JPG in seconds — free, private, and with nothing to install. Bookmark this page for the next time a GIF file refuses to cooperate.
